Galena Mining & Historical Museum

| Old RR depot, now a museum |
Galena, Kansas
As you leave Galena heading west, keep a lookout on your right for the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas (KATY) railroad depot, which now houses the Galena Mining and Historical Museum. The museum serves as the community's historical journal and attic, and is well worth a short stop to sample some of its treasures.
The museum owes its existence partly to the efforts of local historian Howard Litch, whose importance to the community is memorialized in the nearby Route 66 Howard "Pappy" Litch Park.
The museum contains not only mineral specimens and mining equipment central to the region's historical economy, but also a collection of mining-related paintings by a local artist. Out back, there are even some pieces of military equipment on display, including a helicopter.
