Holiday Drive-In Theater
Springfield, Missouri

| The sign, visible from Route 66 |
On the eastern outskirts of Springfield is what remains of the Holiday Drive-In movie theater. Outdoor theaters really hit their stride in the 1950s, so their rise and fall roughly parallels that of Route 66 and her sister pre-interstate highways.
As the new interstate highways made suburban living practical, the large tracts of land outside the city limits where the drive-ins stood became more and more valuable to developers, and the ever-increasing taxes on those properties made the drive-in theater's business model less and less tenable.
