As you pass through suburban St Louis on your Route 66 cruise, make it a point to take in a St Louis tradition. The world-famous Ted Drewes' Frozen Custard has been “serving St Louis' favorite frozen treats for 75 years.”

Don't let the photograph above fool you. It was taken early one morning, before most businesses of any kind had opened. A couple of hours after that photo was taken, and still before opening time, a crowd began to gather outside in sweet anticipation of those fabulous “concretes.”

By the time the store's staff actually began taking orders, there were at least fifty people waiting.

When a store has been around for over seventy years, and they draw a crowd like that on a typical morning, you know that something special is going on.

The Drewes family has received a number of propositions over the years to franchise the business, but Ted Drewes was too concerned about quality to take that plunge. There are just the two stores in St Louis, both owned and operated by the Drewes family.

With ice cream being a rather seasonal product at this latitude, Ted Drewes makes use of the off-season by selling Christmas trees to the local public.
