The 5-1/2 by 14-foot artwork was undertaken in the 1970s and dedicated March 24, 1973—Joplin's 100th birthday. In 2005, it was cleaned and restored and re-located to its present home. Currently valued at $8 million, the work was originally purchased by the city for $60,000 with help from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Also on display are some sketches detailing the conception and creation of the mural, as well as other artifacts relating to Mr. Benton.
