Carthage, which calls itself the Maple Leaf City, is the seat of Jasper County. The town square is dominated by the Jasper County Courthouse, built of local Carthage marble in the 1890s.
Carthage has much for the Route 66 roadie to see, the most famous being the Boots Motel and the 66 Drive-In Theater. But that's certainly not all.
The Powers Museum is located on a plot of land once occupied by the Park Motor Court, an authentic Route 66 tourist lodging. That name was inspired by Municipal Park just across the street, which was established as a public works project during the Great Depression. Exhibits at the Powers focus on local history.
You might also be interested in the larger-than-life statue of television naturalist Marlin Perkins elsewhere in town. And, just a few miles northeast of town is the remarkable village of Red Oak II.
