Old 66 in NM Moving?

Old Route 66 has always gone east and west in New Mexico. But in Edgewood the Mother Road is heading south.
Following a series of public meetings, all parties seem to agree that the best choice for improving the N.M. 344/Old Route 66 intersection is a plan that would expand the intersection and roadbed south from the existing lanes, said Phil Gallegos, lead District 3 engineer for the project.
Starting in December, the public, town officials and a team of New Mexico Department of Transportation engineers and environmental specialists began whittling down eight proposed options. The final meeting was Feb. 10.
Now that the selection has been made, Gallegos said his department will begin taking core samples around and in the intersection and will work on the final intersection and turn lane designs.
The preliminary drawings presented at public meetings were conceptual only, he said. Now it's time to get into the real design work, which will include finalizing the lengths of turn lanes and medians, Gallegos said.
The NMDOT design team will consult with affected business owners on exact turn lane locations and lengths, how to best facilitate access to their stores and traffic control during the construction, he said.
In about three months, he said, project designers will hold another public meeting to reveal details of the final design.
Construction on the new intersection should begin in March 2006, Gallegos said.
