New Route 66 Eateries in California

A few new restaurants will join Glendora's culinary scene over the next few months.

Renovations are under way to turn the former Millie's Restaurant and Bakery on Route 66 into a Honey's Restaurant and Bakery, an independently owned and operated business.

All-American food will be served when the restaurant opens in late April, depending on weather. Millie's closed in December because of stiff competition, officials said.

Some of the owners of Honey's also are involved in Legends, another independently owned and operated restaurant under construction at 1155 E. Route 66.

A shopping center separates the two establishments.

Legends is scheduled to open in June, depending on weather.

The 6,500-square-foot eatery includes a drive-through and outdoor patio dining.

Earlier this year, the Glendora Redevelopment Agency approved $41,700 in financial assistance to Legends owners Demetrios Kefallinos, Theoni Kefallinos, Petros Tsianos and Sotiria Tsianos.

The money will not be repaid to the agency under the terms of the contract between the property owner and the redevelopment agency.

The group needed financial help to repair curbs, gutters and sidewalks, and move a Verizon service vault.

In Glendora's downtown gateway corner, Hill Street Cafe, on Glendora Avenue at Foothill Boulevard, has been sold and expected to change hands April 30, according to co-owner Charbl Ghaby.

Ghaby said the new owners will keep the Hill Street Cafe name for a month or so.

The restaurant opened in the summer of 2002 in the city's gateway location amid a recall of three Glendora council members.

At the time, Ghaby, 25, said he was not involved in politics and wouldn't let the upheaval affect his business.

He and his brother, George, 35, also own the original Hill Street Cafe in La Canada Flintridge, which is twice the size of the Glendora restaurant.

He said they are looking for a larger location in Glendora.

The Hill Street Cafe replaced the popular 1950s-style Fender Benders Diner.
