Daughter of Route 66 Innovator Dies

TULSA, Okla. - Helen Louise Avery Berghell, longtime Tulsan and daughter of Cyrus Avery, who was known as the "Father of Route 66," died Sept. 10 in Newport Beach, Calif. She was 91.

A visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday at Rose Hill Funeral Home in Tulsa. A graveside service is set for 1 p.m. Friday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulsa.

She was born Aug. 2, 1916, to Essie (McClelland) and Cyrus Avery in Tulsa.

She attended Holland Hall and the University of Oklahoma.

In 1945, she married Robin C. Berghell in Colorado Springs, Colo. They moved to Westwood, Calif., where they lived for the next 50 years.

Her father, a Tulsa businessman, was the driving force behind the creation of Route 66.

In 2004, the former 11th Street Bridge, which carried U.S. 66 over the Arkansas River, was renamed the Cyrus Avery Route 66 Memorial Bridge in his honor.

She is survived by a son, Robert Berghell of Newport Beach, Calif., and three grandchildren.
