Scenic Byways Funding to Benefit Route 66
2007-12-12 10:12:23
The New Mexico Tourism Department's Scenic Byways Program has received $576,477 in federal funds to help fund nearly $800,000 in projects for 2008.
Michael Cerletti, the state's secretary for tourism, said the funds help bring recognition to rural New Mexico, where many of the byways are located.
The grants are part of the Federal Highway Administration's National Scenic Byways Program, which recognizes selected roads based on their archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational or scenic qualities.
The grants will go to 11 projects for which the Tourism Department submitted grant applications, including a gateway in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque for the Route 66 and El Camino Real National Scenic Byways, a bike/pedestrian trail in Gallup, a kiosk about the Santa Fe Trail in Raton, the Route 66 Neon Gateway in Grants, wayfinding signs in Santa Rosa and the Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway, and interpretive exhibits for the Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway.
The application process for FY 2009 grants starts next spring. For more information, call (505) 827-8428.
