City Acquires Historic Motel

2008-03-12 19:49:29

The city of Albuquerque is fixing up the El Vado Motel.

After a long, contentious battle with the motel's current owner, it's been condemned and the city has taken control.

The Route 66 staple was built in the 1930s but closed its doors five years ago.

Now the city is getting a look at the landmark's deterioration and hopes to re-open the motel as a museum or workplace for artisans.

The courts will determine how much the property is worth and the city will pay that amount to the current owner.
