COLUMBUS, Kan. - The Cherokee County Commission on Monday heard a request for $1,000 to benefit a three-state effort to promote historic Route 66.

Carolyn Pendleton, with the Route 66 Visitor Center in Baxter Springs, and Renee Charles, with Four Women on the Route in Galena, made the request.

The commissioners reacted favorably to the request but did not formally approve the appropriation. The commission was working with the Columbus Chamber of Commerce to fill out a grant application from a county tourism fund. The fund is financed through a county hotel and motel tax.

Larry Eller, community development director for Miami, Okla., plans to apply for a $50,000 grant from the National Scenic Byways Program. The money would be used to publish a 48-page tourism brochure featuring attractions along the route from Vinita, Okla., to Carthage, Mo., and including 13 miles in Cherokee County. A total of 150,000 copies of the brochure would be published, with copies going to cities and tourism centers along the route.

The $1,000 from Cherokee County would be part of a required $10,000 match. Pendleton said the Baxter Springs City Council has committed $1,000. Charles said the Galena Chamber of Commerce has committed $500, and that she will ask the Galena City Council for the same amount at its meeting tonight.

The Joplin (Mo.) Convention and Visitors Bureau has pledged $3,000 toward the effort. Missouri bureaus in Carthage and Webb City have pledged $1,000 each.
