Admiral Twin Drive-In Gets Face Lift from Hampton’s “Save-A-Landmark” Program, Just in Time for Summer Movie Season. . .

WHAT: On Tuesday, May 24, more than 15 volunteers from four local Hampton Inn® hotels will work together to refurbish Tulsa’s most famous landmark—the Admiral Twin Drive-In. The theater epitomizes the nostalgic drive-ins of yesteryear, so much so that the roadside attraction was featured in Frances Ford Coppola’s 1980 film “The Outsiders” as the ultimate 1950s hangout.

Located on historic Route 66, the Admiral Twin is one of only eight drive-ins remaining in Oklahoma and the state’s largest drive-in with a capacity for more than 1,000 cars.

Volunteers from Hampton Hotels’ “Save-A-Landmark” program will restore movie magic to the 54-year-old theater by painting; updating the marquee signs, ticket booth and concession stand; and landscaping the 38-acre site, allowing future generations to enjoy the drive-in experience. Hampton will contribute nearly 100 hours of manpower and more than $30,000 toward tuning up this all-American landmark.

WHEN: TUESDAY, MAY 24, 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

WHO: Jim Conkle, Route 66 expert; Judy Christa, Vice President, Hampton Hotels; Volunteers from local Hampton Hotels; Route 66 aficionados.

WHERE: 7355 E. Easton Street, Tulsa, Okla.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: America voted the Admiral Twin Drive-In as the lucky recipient of a $20,000 award from Hampton during a two-month online voting campaign. These funds came from Hampton winning the prestigious SMITHSONIAN Magazine/Travelers Conservation Foundation Sustainable Tourism Award.

The Admiral Twin Drive-In, which originally opened as a single screen in 1951 and later added a second screen, is the 23rd landmark to be helped by the Hampton Inn “Save-A-Landmark” program, which bands its hotel employees together to refurbish unique and cultural roadside landmarks across the U.S.

Public nominations for future refurbishments are accepted via www.hamptonlandmarks.com.
