2005-06-22 22:27:42
Two famous Route 66 icons, the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge and Ted Drewes Frozen Custard are both 76 years old this year and Trailnet is celebrating with a Bridge Birthday Bash and Bicycle Ride on Sunday.
The celebration will include blues, Schlafly brews, and Ted Drewes frozen custard when riders return to the bridge after their ride.
The bike ride will begin at the Missouri entrance to the bridge, 10830 Riverview Drive in St. Louis. Registration is from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m.
With a kids' route scheduled, the ride can be a great outdoor activity for families. The 14-mile kids' route follows the Madison County Transit Confluence Trail up to the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site for a rest stop. Then, it's back to the bridge for some birthday cake topped by Ted Drewes Frozen Custard while supplies last.
The bluegrass band, Cumberland Gap, will play from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and beverages from Schlafly Brewery will be available for purchase as will food from Lion's Choice.
Flat to rolling routes of 27 and 32 miles on scenic Madison County trails are also planned.
The ride fee for Trailnet members is $6, non-member tickets are $9, and children under 13 are $3 with an adult. Services provided include route markings, a map, and SAG (service and gear) support until 3 p.m., mechanic.
To reach the Missouri entrance to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge exit westbound Interstate 270 at Riverview and go south about 100 yards. Additional parking is available at the North Riverfront Park one mile farther south.
Trailnet is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting bicycle and walking activities. The group collaborates with public and private sectors to ensure and enhance a premier trail system in the bi-state St. Louis region.
Trailnet offers a free Calendar of Bicycle Fun Club Rides on its Web site www.trailnet.org or you can pick one up at your local bike shop or call the Trailnet office at 1-314-416-9930, Ext. 114.
