Route 66 in the News
Lexington, Ill., Planning Trail Along 66

The popularity of hiking/biking trails and the attraction of historic Route 66 are too often underestimated by those not interested in either.
Lexington and Towanda are among communities in McLean County that recognize the value of both and particularly the advantage of having both interests converge.
Their continuing efforts to preserve Route 66 history by developing a recreational trail along the old highway route should be encouraged.
The recent formation of the Lexington Route 66 Parkway committee is a welcome development. The committee will provide an avenue for obtaining community ideas, seeking grants and putting together a cohesive plan that can mesh with other communities.
The drawbacks of inaction are apparent in looking at the weeds and general untidy appearance of the abandoned portion of old Route 66 at Lexington that remains under state jurisdiction.
The sooner this four-mile segment can be transferred from state to city control, the sooner work can be done to improve its look and thereby enhance Lexington's image.
As committee member Fran Turgeon said, "It's our front door."
But the committee is looking beyond the immediate situation -- and such long-term thinking is good.
For example, Jack Jenkins, a committee member who was involved in a similar project in Towanda, suggested planting hardwood trees along the trail. As the trees mature, they can provide shade for trail users.
It is important as various communities develop these recreation trails that they communicate with each other to facilitate eventual connections between the trails. That will enhance their value not only for each community's residents but also as potential tourist draws.
