Annual Event Called Off

San Bernardino's signature event, the Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous, will not be held this year.

The San Bernardino Convention and Visitors Bureau on Tuesday announced its decision to suspend the annual car show, citing financial difficulties.

The show has been a summertime event since 1990, drawing hundreds of thousands to the city's downtown area each year, though those crowds had dwindled recently.

"It was a gut-wrenching decision that we had to make, but we just didn't have the resources to put it on this year," said Jim Gerstenslager, the chairman of the bureau's Board of Directors.

The annual classic car show's exit from San Bernardino's 2013 social calendar is accompanied by the loss of the San Bernardino Convention and Visitors Center, which produces the Rendezvous, as well as the California Welcome Center, which is a tourism information center.

Closure of both entities is scheduled for March 31, said Ed Foster, who manages a Route 66-themed merchandise shop inside the Welcome Center called Our Town.
